The International Space Station (ISS) is a multi-nation construction project ( it is a “co-operative programme” between Europe, the United States, Russia, Canada and Japan, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) that is the largest single structure humans ever put into space. Its main construction was completed between 1998 and 2011. It has been fully occupied since Nov. 2, 2000.
2. 244 individuals from 19 countries have visited the International Space Station. Top participating countries include the United States (153 people) and Russia (50 people).
3. Astronauts on the International Space Station, or ISS, often spend six to 12 months in space, orbiting Earth. Astronauts still need to do their everyday living, such as working, eating, relaxing and exercising, but with fewer resources than they have on Earth.
