South Australia is the third largest state in Australia. The majority of the population, farmland, and industry in South Australia is located in the southeast of the state. Adelaide is the capital and largest city. Most of South Australia's land is too dry for farming, and agriculture is heavily reliant on irrigation or groundwater. Wheat and fruits such as apricots, pears, peaches, nectarines, and grapes are grown along the lower Murray River. Tasmania, an island state, is sometimes called the "Apple Isle" because it produces most of the apples in Australia. Tasmania is one of the few places in Australia where there is enough rainfall throughout the year. Tasmania is a leading Australian producer of various types of pears and berries, and also grows potatoes in some areas.
