На чолі Паризької комуни стояли об'єднані в коаліцію соціалісти й анархісти. Обрані у Версалі праві Національні збори намагалися роззброїти Національну гвардію. Уряд комуни втратив владу, коли війська Версаля захопили Париж і було убито 20—30 тис. людей (21—28 травня).
