Биомасса экосистемы и ее биологическая продуктивность могут очень сильно отличаться. Например, в густом лесу общая биомасса организмов очень велика по сравнению с ее годовым приростом — продукцией. Тогда как в пруду небольшая накопленная биомасса фитопланктона имеет высокую скорость возобновления — образования продукции за счет быстрого размножения
