One key event was the climate pessimism of the early Middle Ages, beginning in 535 CE, but the catalyst for migration was the conquest of Europe by the Huns 160 years before this event. Under the blows of the Huns the Roman Empire was weakened and actually split in two. The Romans were forced to withdraw from previously conquered colonies, including the British Isles. At the same time, under pressure from the Huns, the Germanic tribes of Angles and Saxons were forced to flee westwards and settle in the British Isles, displacing the native Celtic inhabitants. The conquest of Europe by the Huns thus contributed to the subsequent formation of Britain. The Great Migration of Peoples was accompanied by cultural, linguistic and later religious conflicts between the Germanic tribes and the Romanized sedentary population. The Great Migration laid the foundations for the formation and development of new states on the European continent during the Middle Ages.
