Сам роман в первую очередь содержит в себе христианский дидактизм. Он отсылает читателя к Евангелию от Матфея, к Нагорной проповеди Иисуса Христа и к его завету быть истинным праведником, ничего не делать напоказ и нести в своём сердце любовь к ближнему своему, даже с врагом оставаться милосердным, беречь честь и достоинство. Это многократно отмечалось и исследователями-литературоведами.

В повести «Капитанская дочка» Мария и Петр Гринев относились друг к другу с большой любовью. Они заботились друг о друге, и были готовы пожертвовать всем ради своей/своего любимого. Как Пётр защищал и спасал Марию от Швабрина, также и Мария спасала Гринева от ссылки в Сибирь.
Мария не любила Швабрина, Швабрин сам по себе негативный персонаж. Он сделал для Марии много плохого, заставлял ее выйти за него, угрожал ей что расскажет все Пугачеву. Понятно что, Мария испытывала только негативные эмоции по отношению к нему.
