1. If it were not for hope, the heart would break. ~ The only thing that kept sb. from despair was hope; without hope sb. would fall into despair.
2. If the pills were pleasant, they would not be gilded. ~ If sth. lacks its appropriate features, it is bound to make up for it in some other way.
3. If there were no clouds, we should not enjoy the sun. ~ Feelings tend to wear off with time, even the most pleasant ones; hardships make scarce moments of happiness more pleasant on the basis of contrast.
4. If things were to be done twice all would rise. ~ In real life, everyone has but one chance to do anything, there are no second chances. If there were, people wouldn't have done those mistakes they did.
