POLICE OFFICER`S INTERVIEWED

Police Officer Richard Woodcock from the Crime Prevention Unit of the Metropolitan Police. Richard tells what characterizes a typical burglary.

Well, burglary is one of the crimes most people worry about, not so much because of property, but more because of the sense of invasion it causes – the idea that someone has touched your personal belongings. Many residential burglaries occur because of common misunderstanding. For example, while people typically worry about night-crime thefts, nearly 50 % of residential breakings happen during the day, when homes are vacant because owners are out working. What is more, robbing a house takes less time than many people think. Most burglars get in and out in less than ten minutes.

Police all over the country have targeted burglary. Operation Bumblebee, for example, was a major crime prevention campaign run by Metropolitan Police and aimed at apprehending the burglars. The operational conditions have included raids on criminals who are known to sell stolen property. At the end of Operation Bumblebee (1st year) burglaries fell by 13 %, a figure which has to be considered a success.

Most house owners are aware of the risk of being burgled, and the majority have already installed locks on doors and windows. What many of these same people don`t do, however, is use those locks! So, rule number one is lock up before you go out. And what ever you do, don`t leave the keys under the doormat, hoping that nobody can find them. If you have another set of keys, leave them with a trusted neighbor or friend. A home alarm system is another rule – number two. But make sure, you have it put in by an operator from the Home Security Service Office. Your local crime prevention officer an give you advice on how to choose an operator. And don`t forget about the garage door as well. This can provide easy access for burglars not only into your car but directly into your home if there is an adjoining door.
