Предлог for отвечает за длительность действия. В отличие от since, может находиться в предложениях любой группы времен (Present, Past, Future и т.д.).
I have been living in London for 3 years.
We went to Paris for two weeks.
I will be away for 5 days.
То есть, грубо говоря это означает "на протяжении какого-то времени"
Since употребляется только Perfect и означает, что действие, которое началось в прошлом ещё не закончилось сейчас.
We’ve been living in Boston since 2005 - Мы живём в Бостоне с 2005, то есть, мы жили там с 2005 и живем здесь и по сей день
I have known Natalie since April - Я знаю Наташу с апреля, то есть, как я её знала в апреле, то так я и знаю её сейчас.
