Once there was a poor Student who (fall) in love with a beautiful young girl. But she (say) to him one day: “I (dance) with you if you (bring) me a red rose.”

" But it's winter now and there (be) no roses in my garden," cried the unhappy Student, " if I (not / get) a rose, she (forget) me and my heart (break).”

From the tree the Nightingale (hear) how he (cry) and decided to help him. She (fly) to the Rose-tree under the Student's window and asked for one red rose. But there (be) no roses on that tree. But the tree (tell) her that there (be) a terrible way to get a red rose. The Nightingale (think) that Love was better than Life, so she agreed. The young Student still (lie) on his bed.
