The Science of Economics.
Most people work to earn a living, and produce goods and services. Goods are either agricultural (like maize), or manufactured (like cars). Services are such things as education, medicine and commerce. Some people provide goods; some people provide services. Other people provide both goods and services. For example, in the same garage a man may buy a car or some service which helps him.
Large areas of Industry - coal mining, electricity generation, the railways are openly State-owned, arid in many other instances - for example, some provincial bus undertakings - Government control is no less real for being less obvious. Local authorities, too, add to the volume of enterprises in official ownership by providing water supplies and .running local transport services.
Private enterprise still accounts for a large proportion of the output of goods and services in the United Kingdom, but even here State influence is considerable. Computers, aircraft, construction and other great industries that, by their output, pricing export and employment policies, have important effects on the economy as a whole receive much supervision and assistance. Laws exist which may be used to restrain firms from combining into monopolies, and to prevent or restrict manufacturers control over the prices charged for their products by retailers. Taxation policies can be used to influence the managers of new or expanding firms in their choice of suitable places for setting up a plant Sometimes the Government will make direct grants to private Industry, as it has done regularly in agriculture and civil aviation, and as it did in furtherance of a particular policy when the textile Industry was reorganized in the early 1960s.
Health, education and the social services, though not generally thought of as industries, are largely under the centralized control, thereby insuring, as in the centrally planned economy, that the allocation of the benefits involved is made on the basis pf need rather than wealth.
Finally, the supply of money in the economy, obtained by the public mainly, from their local bank branches but also from other financial institutions, comes originally from the Bank of England.
