В повести "Капитанская дочка" автор описал Пугачёва, как человека, пытающийся найти своё место, при этом подражая кому-то. На самом деле он обычный человек, который просто не может сидеть на месте. Пугачёв ищет приключения. Он жаждит славы, хоть и пронеслась она среди людей не как о герое, а как о разбойнике и беспощадном убийце. Емельян хочет хотя бы казаться при людях хорошим. Он не желает, чтобы о нём говорили плохо. Пугачёва душит самолюбие и гордость. К его великому сожалению, люди не воспринимают Емельяна, как великого человека. Его по прежнему считают предателем. За ним следую только потому, что сами бояться руководствовать шайкой. Разбойники надеются при их разоблачении скинуть всю вину на Пугачёва. А он в свою очередь снова получит удар в спину.
