Неожиданно засвистел паровозный свисток. Ваня очнулся и рассказал о своих видениях отцу. Отец в ответ захохотал. Генерал отозвался о простых мужиках как о варварах, о «диком скопище пьяниц» , не способном создать что-либо хорошее, и упрекнул рассказчика в том, что тот изображает лишь грустные картины жизни. Рассказчик соглашается показать «светлую сторону» — момент, когда «труды роковые» окончены. Народ собрался у конторы за расчетом, однако денег не дали, напротив, мужики еще и должны остались. Приехал подрядчик осматривать проделанную работу. Сказал, что недоимку дарит, а заодно дарит и бочку вина.
