Правописание О – Ё после шипящих в корне слова 
Часть речи не определяем, единое правило действует для всех слов: 
1) есть чередование Ё//Е в однокоренном слове → Ё: шЁпот − шЕптать ;пчЁлка – пчЕла, жЁлтый – жЕлтеть; 

2) нет чередования с Е в однокоренном слове → О: крыжОвник, шоссе, шоколад, шофер, жокей, жонглёр, Шотландия, шок, мажор, шов, шорох, капюшон, трущоба, чокаться, крыжовник, шорты и др. 

Правописание О – Ё(Е) после шипящих в суффиксах 
Выбор гласной зависит от части речи: 
1) слово образовано от глагола → Ё: ночЁвка (ночевать) ; печёный (печь) ; 
2) суффикс ЁР в существительных→ стажЁР, ухажЁР; 

3) беглая гласная О → кишОк (киШКи) , ножОн (ноЖНы) , смешОн (смеШНа) . 
4) слово образовано не от глагола → О: девчОнка, волчОк зайчОнок; пачОвый (безударный –ЕВ-: плюшЕвый) . 
5) суффикс наречий → ударный О, безударный Е: свежО, пахучЕ. 

Правописание О – Ё(Е) после шипящих в окончаниях 
Выбор гласной зависит от части речи: 
1) существительных → ударное О, безударное Е: плащОм, товарищЕм; 
2) прилагательных → ударное О, безударное Е: большОго, бывшЕго; 

3) глаголов → Ё: течёт, печёт. 

Запомнить: ОжОг, поджОг, изжОга − существительные; ожЁг, поджЁг − глаголы. ОбжОра, тяжЁлый, мелочЁвка, ещЁ.
