Книжными называют такие слова, которые могут встретиться в научных статьях, учебниках, также в публицистических изданиях, в деловой документации, в произведениях художественной литературы. Их не прикрепляют к какому-нибудь стилю. Они универсальны. К ним принадлежат: воззрение, гипотеза, внедрение, иллюзия, иссякнуть, истоки, исчисляться, утрата и др. Одни из книжных слов имеют своеобразный характер. Они близки к научной терминологии. Другие же можно отнести к книжно-литературным. Бывают умеренно-книжные и сугубо книжные слова. Большая часть книжных слов имеет синоним, который имеет почти одинаковое значение: значительный - большой, некто – кто-то, несколько - немного. Некоторые книжные слова содержат оценку предметов и явлений.

Нейтральными словами называются слова, которые не прикреплены к определённому стилю речи. Они употребляются во всех разновидностях языка при общении, в устной и в письменной речи. Эти слова имеют стилистические синонимы. Сами они не имеют стилистической окраски. Они составляют главную часть языка, соединяя остальные его части. Например, слово бродить – нейтральное, а его синоним блуждать – книжное; взгляд – нейтральное, взор - книжное.

Разговорными словами называют слова, которые придают разговору характер непринуждённости и неофициальности. Они не являются грубыми. К ним относятся слова: говорун, грязнуля, дурнушка, задирать, зубрить и др. Большая часть таких слов показывает отношение к предмету или явлению, которое называют. Это слова: бабуся, малыш, баталия и др. Но не все такие слова эмоциональны. Это слова: вздремнуть, кадровик, перекур, мигом и др. Разговорные слова являются средством выразительности в художественной литературе.
