1) He asked who there was. = He opened a door and shouted down some stairs: Who is there?"
2) The capitan asked him what he was doing there. = "What you are doing there, William?''  - the captain asked.
3) The captain asked what he was doing. =  "What he is doing?'' -  the captain asked.
4) William answered that he was helping him. = "He is helping me, Captain". -William answered.
5) The captain asked if Tom was there.   = "Is Tom here? '' - the captain shouted then.
