Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Alva Edison is one of the most famous and fruitful inventors of all time.

Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in the USA, in a small town of Milan, state Ohio.

He was the youngest of seven children in the family. Thomas had serious health

problems when a child. That's why he did badly at school. In fact, he attended a

public school only for three months. Teachers thought he was stupid, but he couldn't

hear well. His mother was a teacher and she took him from school and taught him at

home. She always believed in Thomas and thought he was really smart. Later,

Thomas became almost deaf.

Edison was very curious, he asked himself lots of questions. At his early age, he

showed love for mechanical things and for chemical experiments. He started doing

his own experiments at 13 – he made his own laboratory in his father's shed. Edison

started working at the age of 12. He sold newspapers and candies in the trains. Then

he started working at the telegraph.

Thomas Edison worked hard all his life, often working all night in his laboratory,

and would not come home for days at a time. When asked what makes a genius he

said, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration."

Edison opened a new laboratory in Menlo Park, NJ, in 1876. This place later become

known as an "invention factory," since they worked on several different inventions

at any given time there. He had many assistants in his laboratory in Menlo Park

near New York. They worked together on his inventions. Edison also organized

some companies, some of them still work, like «General Electrics».

Thomas Alva Edison made a great influence on modern life, because of his

inventions such as a light bulb, a phonograph, and a motion pictures camera. He

also improved the telegraph and telephone. Edison continued to work and invent

till he was over 70, often working 16 hours a day! During his long and productive

life Edison made 1,300 inventions. Edison also managed to become a successful

manufacturer and businessman, marketing his inventions to the public. Edison died

on October 18, 1931, at the age of 84.
