A Bull Terrier Peggy became the mascot of the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders after soldiers discovered her as an abandoned puppy in Malaya. The soldiers were taken prisoner but kept Peggy and shared their food with her. During their imprisonment, in the hopeless situation, just struggling to survive, Peggy's presence boosted their morale.
Upon release, she lived at the battalion's barracks in Aberdeen until dying in 1947. Peggy was described as a "loyal companion" to the soldiers as they fought against Japanese forces. Peggy bravely fought against enemies with her friends. When Gordon Highlanders were sent to Thailand to carry out hard physical work, the dog played an integral role in lifting the soldiers’ spirits When Peggy saw that Gordon Highlanders were attacked, she rushed to defend them and got a lot of scars.
The soldiers refused to travel back to Scotland unless Peggy was allowed to join them on the journey home. Peggy was nominated for the PDSA award by Stewart Mitchell, a volunteer historian at the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen, Scotland.

In 1925, dogs showed us that humanity could rely on them. It was also known as the Great Race of Mercy and The Serum Run. A small Alaskan town of Nome was in the throes of a deadly diphtheria epidemic. It faced difficulties because there was no treatment as it was cut off in the depths of severe Alaskan winter. To save the town's inhabitants, 20 teams of sled dogs transported a vital anti-toxin over 674 miles (1,085km) of ice and snow, in just six days, through the most brutal winter conditions.
Siberian huskies named Balto and Togo led the sleds to transport the serum from Nenana to Nome. By 31 January 1925, they had travelled 170 miles (274km) from Nome to meet the oncoming serum delivery. At one point during the trip, Seppala the dogs’ owner was unable to see through the storm, but Togo led the team in a straight line through the dark to safety. Working as a team, Seppala's dogs found their way struggling with severe Alaskan winter. The dogs team saved 10,000 lives. The story made Siberian Huskies famous. Balto is immortalised in a bronze statue in New York's Central Park.
All dogs' stories tell us about their devotion and love for humans. Dogs are real human friends. We can always rely on them.
