The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world between the continents of America, Asia and Oceania.[1] The name Pacific was given by the Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan, who sailed around the world on behalf of the Spanish kingdom. When Magellan passed through the Strait of Magellan, which he named after days of difficult and stormy conditions, and opened into this ocean, he gave this name based on the Portuguese word "Pacifico", which means "calm", because the storms subsided and calm waters welcomed him. It has a surface area of 179.7 million km². It has almost as much surface area as the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean combined.
