It is believed that the dish was first prepared by the London company Fortnum & Mason (English) Russian. in 1738. According to another version, the authorship of the dish is unknown, but the recipe goes back to the Mughal dish “Nargizi kufta”.

The recipe for this dish was first found in print in Maria Randall's book A New System of Home Cooking, published in 1809. In this and later 19th-century cookbooks, boiled eggs were recommended to be served hot with gravy. Nowadays, it is also eaten cold, especially as a snack at picnics.

During the Great Patriotic War, under the rationing system, a version of the recipe was created in which minced meat was replaced with mashed potatoes.
