Bethany Hamilton, a 13-year-old surfing enthusiast, lost her left arm in a shark attack while surfing at Tunnels Beach in Hawaii. Despite losing 60% of her blood, she managed to escape death and returned to surfing three weeks later. Her father, Tom, helped her by fitting a special handle on her boards. Bethany has since won the National Scholastic Surfing Association Nationals in 2005 and took fifth place in a local competition. Despite not returning to the beach where her accident occurred, Bethany is a strong person who believes anyone can overcome obstacles.
