Згідно з міфами Стародавньої Греції, у морського божества Форкія і його сестри Кето було три дочки, які мали вигляд змієголових чудовиськ. Евріала і Сфено були безсмертними від народження, і лише їхня молодша сестра Медуза залишалася вразливою.

Згідно з переказами, Медуза Горгона була симпатичною дівчиною з красивим волоссям. Намагаючись знайти захист від приставань Посейдона, вона зникла в храмі Афіни. Однак богові все одно вдалося проникнути в притулок дівчини у вигляді птиці та оволодіти нею. Розгнівана богиня виплеснула свою злобу на Медузу, перетворивши її жахливе чудовисько зі змієподібним волоссям.

Медуза Горгона, на відміну від своїх сестер, хоч і не була безсмертною, але могла зачаровувати людей своїм поглядом. Її дивовижний дар служив як смертоносна зброя. Досить було якійсь людині побачити прямий погляд Медузи Горгони, як він моментально перетворювався на кам 'яну статую.
