Если надо сообщить о действии, которое произошло раньше другого действия в прошлом или указанного времени в прошлом, то используем Past Perfect (had + V3).
Если важно подчеркнуть, действие в прошлом длилось какое-то время (указано from 5 till 7, the whole day) или оно было прервано другим действием, то используем Past Continuous (was/were + V-ing).
А если важно, что действие длилось какое-то время и завершилось до какого-то момента в прошлом, то нужно использовать Past Perfect Continuous (had + been + V-ing).
