1 You were reading a book.

2 Maria and Tamara were swimming in the lake.

3 I was playing basketball.

4 Carl was having lunch at home.

5 John was driving across the Sahara Desert.

The past continuous tense is formed with was/were + verb + -ing. We use was for singular subjects and were for plural subjects or you.
