THE OLYMPICS
The modern Olympic Games are over 100years old. They take place every four years in a different city and
country. There are two types of games - the summer Olympics and the winter Olympics.
Ukraine as a country started competing at the Olympics in the winter games in 1994 at Lillehammer, Norway. The
country's first Olympic champion was figure skater Oksana Baiul. Two years later, Ukraine took part in the summer
games for the first time and won nine gold medals at Atlanta, the USA.
Task 3. Read the text again and answer the questions.

2. Who was Ukraine's first Olympic champion?
Only the best athletes can take part in the Olympics. In the early years, Liliia Podkopaieva was one of Ukraine's most
successful gymnasts. When she competed in the summer Olympics in 1996, she won two gold medals, including one
for all-round performance, and one silver medal. In 2016, another Ukrainian gymnast won Olympic medals. Oleh
Vernaiev won gold for his performance on parallel bars, and silver for all-round performance.
Ukrainian athletes are good at water sports, too. The canoeist Yurii Cheban, the sailor Yevhen Braslavets and the
rower Kateryna Tarasenko all have Olympic medals. The swimmer Yana Klochkova, whose nickname is ' the
goldfish', has got five Olympic medals - four gold and one silver. In 2008, she carried the national flag of Ukraine at
the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing.
The Olympic flag is one of the two symbols of the games. There are five rings on it, in different colours - blue,
yellow, black, green and red. These symbolise the five continents where contestants come from (Europe, Asia, Africa,
North America and South America). The other symbol is the Olympic flame. A famous person usually takes it into the
stadium during the opening ceremony. They light the flame and that is the signal can begin.
