Australia has many deserts. It is very hot and dry there and in some parts it hardly ever rains.

There are mountains in the eastern part of Australia, but they are not very high. The highest one is 2,228 metres. There are other mountains in south-western Australia and in the centre of the country.

Water is very important in this dry country and Australia's most important river is the Darling. It is 1,879 kilometres long.
