During my visit to Tokyo, I was struck by how different the city felt compared to other parts of Japan I had visited before. The people moved quickly and with purpose, their eyes focused straight ahead, determined to reach their destinations efficiently. There was little time for leisurely strolls or idle chatter. The streets were impeccably clean, with no litter in sight, and everyone seemed to be dressed in the latest fashion trends.
Instead of traditional Japanese food, I found myself surrounded by international cuisine, with trendy cafes and restaurants offering everything from French pastries to Korean barbecue. There were no street vendors selling grilled octopus or takoyaki, but rather sleek, modern eateries with Michelin stars and high prices.
Gone were the serene and tranquil gardens I had come to associate with Japan. Instead, towering skyscrapers and neon lights dominated the skyline, with crowds of people bustling about their business. Everyone was impeccably polite, but there was a sense of detachment, as though each person was a small cog in a massive machine, focused solely on their work and responsibilities.
While I appreciated the efficiency and modernity of Tokyo, part of me longed for the slower pace of life and traditional charm I had experienced in other parts of Japan. I missed the quiet beauty of a traditional Japanese garden and the simple pleasures of a cup of tea shared with friends. But in Tokyo, it seemed, there was no time for such things.
