Holmes took back the diamond and returned it to its rightful owner, the Countess of Morcar. She was overjoyed to have her family's priceless heirloom back in her possession.

As for James Ryder, he was arrested and charged with theft. After a fair trial, he was sentenced to prison for a number of years.

As for Holmes and Watson, they celebrated their success with a glass of brandy and reflected on the strange and fascinating case they had just solved.
