A. The Commonwealth unites countries which used to be the dependent territories of the British Empire. For example, Jamaica was the first colony of England and the first Caribbean nation which got independence in 1962. However, the country chose to remain a member of the Commonwealth as an independent country. It finds the membership useful as the organization stimulates economic cooperation and encourages democratic and social developments in the member countries.
