Serhiy Pavlovych Korolyov was a Soviet engineer and rocket scientist who is considered the father of practical astronautics. He was responsible for the successful launch of the first satellite, Sputnik 1, and the first human spaceflight, Vostok 1, which carried Yuri Gagarin into orbit.

Korolyov graduated from Moskow Bauman Higher Technical School in 1933.

Before becoming interested in cosmonautics, Korolyov had a connection with aviation. He worked as an aircraft designer and was responsible for the design of several military aircraft.

In 1933, Korolyov met with Tsiolkovsky, a pioneering Russian rocket scientist and spaceflight theorist, and was inspired to pursue a career in rocket engineering.

Under Korolyov's control, significant progress was made in space research, including the launch of the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957, and the first human spaceflight, Vostok 1, in 1961. Korolyov also oversaw the development of the R-7 Semyorka rocket, which would go on to launch the first satellite and first human into space.

Next weekend, two teenagers are going to walk non-stop for 24 hours to try to
raise money for a charity for the homeless in their town. The charity offers a
bed for the night and a hot meal for young homeless people. The teenagers,
Dan Thomas and Ollie Green, want to do something to help these people.
The two boys often go for long walks. Walking is their hobby, but they have
never completed 36 miles all at once and they don’t usually walk at night.
They did a practice walk last month, but got a bit lost, so they have planned the
walk very carefully in the last two weeks. They will have to carry everything
they need, including food and extra clothes. And, because they are walking at
night, they will have to wear special jackets that people can see in the dark.
They hope that the weather will be good because the walk is in summer but, as
Ollie says, ‘You never know in England.’ They will prepare for wet weather
and very hot weather, too.
The boys’ parents and teachers say that they are very happy that the boys are
being so responsible. The walk will take them up hills and down into valleys,
past a river and across fields, but the boys aren’t worried. ‘There are no wild
animals around here,’ they say.
You can give money to the boys by visiting the 'justgiving' page on their
website. And, if you want to cheer them on when they reach the finishing line,
come to the town centre on Sunday evening.
