When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay
To keep me happy all the day.
And sometimes for an hour or so
go,
I watched my leaden soldiers
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bedclothes, through the hi
And sometimes sent my ships in fleet
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.
I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleassant land of counterpane.

The boy is sick and lying in bed.

He plays with toys, including leaden soldiers with different uniforms and drills, ships, and miniature trees and houses.

He compares himself to a giant that sits upon a pillow-hill and can see the land before him.

"Counterpane" in the poem refers to a bedspread or a quilt that is placed on top of a bed. The context in the poem, "the pleasant land of counterpane," suggests that the boy is referring to the bedspread as a type of play area or imaginary world.
