Do aliens exist? The scientists and volunteers at SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) believe they do. This organisation listens out for radio signals from space. So far, they haven’t heard anything, but even if they did, would we understand an alien language?
Exolinguistics is the study of alien languages. Although the people who study it haven’t had the chance to work on a real alien language yet, they expect that it would have words for objects (nouns) and actions (verbs), just like our languages on Earth. For this reason, it should be possible to understand a language from outer space, although it would take a long time.
This is what the film Arrival is all about. It stars Amy Adams as a professor of language, Dr. Louise Banks, who has to use her skills to communicate with an alien species which has suddenly landed on Earth. Dr. Banks quickly realises that, although the aliens make sounds, they don’t use speech to communicate in the same way as humans do. Instead, they use symbols. Dr. Banks has to learn what these strange shapes mean in order to understand why they have come to Earth and what they want.
Arrival is different from most films about aliens arriving on Earth. It doesn’t focus on fighting an alien invasion with guns and technology – instead, it shows us how communication can prevent violence. As the famous scientist Stephen Hawking said, “Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking.”
