Julia Goodall thinks she got a job as a hotel receptionist because she was the best-dressed person at the interview. I'm sure they wouldn't have given me the job if I had dressed in scruffy clothes. They would have chosen someone who was clean and smart.
However, you can sometimes be too smart. If you went to an interview for a job building houses, the bosses would be surprised if you arrived in a beautiful suit.
