HOW TENNIS CAME TO THE UNITED STATES a) The Outerbridge family were mem- bers of the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club in New York. Mary got permission to lay out a tennis court at the edge of their cricket field. As soon as spring came, Mary began to play the game with her brothers and her friends. At first Mary's girlfriends thought the game "unladylike", but Mary and her brothers played it enthusiastically. It was a game that required speed and accuracy and it attracted young men. b) The game of tennis did not originate in the USA. Court tennis was played indoors in France in the thirteenth century. Researchers think that the name tennis comes from the early French word tenetz. It was used in the same way as the command play. The word love used in scor- ing meant a zero and for at least three hundred years the English have used it to indicate no score. In the early fourteenth century in England, Edward III had a tennis court. It was considered the royal game. c) Tennis became very popular. Staten Island, New York, claims the honour of being the birthplace of tennis in the United States. This honour is also claimed by a town in New England because two Ameri- cans played tennis in Nahant, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1875. They held their first tennis tournament there in August 1876. d) In March 1874 Mary Outerbridge returned to New York from Ber- muda, there she had watched British officers playing tennis. She had watched so long that one of the officers suggested, "Would you like to try your hand at it, Miss?" Mary learned to play tennis and thought the game was so interesting that she brought the package containing balls, tennis rackets and a net home with her. e) Luckily, it was at this time in early 1874 that Mary Outerbridge hap- pened to be there. She learned how to play lawn tennis and all that she could about the rules. Thus she was able to introduce the game of tennis for the first time to sportsmen in the United States. f) Many say, that the modern game of tennis was invented by Major Walter C. Wingfield, a British officer. He took the court tennis ideas and made them into lawn tennis, a game played outdoors. He even took a patent ['pettnt] on the game and sold it to many important peo ple. One of his friends liked the game so much that took a good sup- ply of balls and rackets with him to his station in Bermuda where he taught his fellow officers how to play the game. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
