The Great Aral Sea (Great Aral) is a system of hyperhaline lakes in the basin of the divided Aral Sea, formed in 1989 as a result of a decrease in the level of the latter. In 2001, the Great Aral Sea was divided into eastern and western parts, connected by a narrow channel Uzun-Aral, located at an altitude of 34 m above sea level[1]. The original direction of the water flow - from east to west - after the cessation of the flow of Amu Darya waters into the lake changed to the opposite [1]. The area of the western part of the Greater Aral Sea is kept at the level of 3500-3800 km², the average depth is 14-15 m, the maximum depth is 37-40 m[2]. The western segment of the sea is slightly replenished with groundwater, which significantly slows down its drying [3]. Groundwater gives an inflow equal to an average of 2 km³ of water per year[2]. In relatively wet years, the East Sea is partially restored, but after the end of the floods on the rivers, it quickly disappears due to the flow of water to the western part and the evaporation of water over a large area of shallow salt marshes.
