There are five broad climate types on Earth: tropical, dry, temperate, continental, polar.

Tropical climate.

Tropical climates are defined by a monthly average temperature of 18 °C (64.4 °F) or higher in the coolest month, and feature hot temperatures all year-round. Annual precipitation is often abundant in tropical climates, and shows a seasonal rhythm but may have seasonal dryness to varying degrees.

Dry climate.

Dry climate is characterised by low and unpredictible precipitation. The lowest rainfall occurs in arid, or desert, areas where precipitation averages less than 35 cm per year, and some deserts have years with no rainfall at all.

Temperate climate.

Temperate climates are generally defined as environments with moderate rainfall spread across the year or portion of the year with sporadic drought, mild to warm summers and cool to cold winters.

Continental climate.

Continental climates often have a significant annual variation in temperature. They tend to occur in the middle latitudes, within large landmasses where prevailing winds blow overland bringing some precipitation, and temperatures are not moderated by bodies of water.

Polar climate.

The polar climate regions are characterized by a lack of warm summers but with varying winters. Every month in a polar climate has an average temperature of less than 10 °C. Regions with polar climate cover more than 20% of the Earth's area.
