Millau Viaduct: the tallest bridge in the world!
The Millau viaduct is a road bridge that crosses the valley of the River Tarn in Southern
France. At its tallest point it is 343 m tall, which makes it 19 m taller than the Eiffel Tower
and 37 m shorter than the Empire State Building. Interestingly, the Millau viaduct was built
more than one hundred years later than the Eiffel Tower; however, they were both built by
the same company, the Eiffage Group. Work began in October 2001 and the French
President Jacques Chirac officially opened the bridge on 14 December 2004. Cars were able
to use it two days later. The bridge is just under 2.5 km long and every day between 10,000
and 25,000 cars cross the bridge. The architects who were working on the bridge didn't want
drivers to feel scared at such a height. So, they designed the bridge in such a way that when
driving, it's difficult to look down.
