Zoos are very popular attractions for adults and children. But are they really a good thing?

Critics of zoos say that animals are often physically and mentally harmed by their confinement. Even the best artificial environments can't match the space, variety, and freedom of animals in their natural habitats. This deprivation causes many zoo animals to become depressed or mentally ill. Keeping animals in the wild also causes a lot of suffering by separating families. Some zoos keep animals out of nature: for example, marine parks often force dolphins and whales to perform tricks. These mammals can die decades earlier than their wild relatives, and some even attempt suicide.

On the other hand, by bringing people and animals together, zoos have the potential to educate the public about conservation issues and inspire people to protect animals and their habitats. Some zoos provide a safe environment for animals that have been abused in circuses or abandoned pets. Zoos also conduct important research such as animal behavior and disease treatment.

Some species that are rare in nature are difficult to find and breed. A good zoo allows these species to live and reproduce in a safe environment. Additionally, as some wild species decline, the risk of populations becoming too genetically similar increases. animals raised in zoos can be released into the wild.

But zoo opponents say the vast majority of captive breeding programs do not release animals back into the wild.
