Hi Martin,

Thanks for your postcard. I really envy you’re going to all those exciting places! There’s no chance of a holiday for me this year, I’m afraid. My French lessons are progressing well and my test is booked for the next month. Wish me luck!

Anyway, I’m writing to tell you about advantages and disadvantage of telephoning you asked me in your recent letter. To start with, it’s certainly quicker to telephone than to write a letter but, in my opinion, it may not always be the best way to communicate.

Another thing, telephone is ideal when you need immediate answer. You know, many problems can be solved easily and decision taken quickly if we discuss them with someone on the phone.

One more thing I’d like to say is few people would disagree that phoning is a pleasant way to keep in touch with friends and family; however, the nice thing about receiving letters is that you can keep them and re-read them. So writing letters is far from dying.

Well, I must finish. Hope my notes will help you write your final exam paper. Why don’t you come and stay with us at the weekend after your test? Let me know when you’ll be free.
