Kobzar Art
From time immemorial the Ukrainian land has been famous for the art of kobzars. The word meant singers and poets that travelled about the country performing their songs while playing the kobza. Those who played the lyre or bandura were called kobzars, too.
The history of Ukrainian Cossacks found its reflection in dumas, which is a kind of heroic folk epics which is performed as recitative.
Kobzar heritage was destroyed by the tsarist authority, and in the Soviet Union they were persecuted. Kobzar art flourished at the times of Zaporizhian Sich until it was destroyed in 1775. One of the outstanding kobzars was Ostap Veresay, who was presented Kobzar book by Taras Shevchenko. The book had a special inscription.
Unfortunately, a lot of kobzars have died already. In the history of Cossack art there are lots of black spots. Nowadays Ukrainians are looking for a way to revive the interest to kobza. It is our task to recover the pages about "Blind Homer" travelling about the Ukraine.
