Education in Kyrgyzstan is compulsory for nine years, between the ages of seven and fifteen[1]. After four years of primary school and five years of secondary school, the system offers two years of high general school, secondary special school or vocational school[2].

The Ministry of Education and Science (MON) is responsible for education in Kyrgyzstan [3]. The budget cut, which led to lower teachers' salaries and availability of equipment, is disproportionately reflected in the decrease in the number of female students[1].

In 2008, 3.7 percent of gross domestic product was spent on education[4]. In 2001, about 89 percent of the relevant age group were enrolled in the mandatory program, but this figure decreased in the early 2000s[1][4]. In 2004, the literacy rate in Kyrgyzstan was 98.7 percent[1].
