Корень противоречия в двуличности людей. Одновременно хорошее и положительное может быть ужастным и омерзительным. Сначала герой увидел в полковнике заботливого отца и это показалось ему очень трогательным. Потом он увидел, как том безжалостно расправился с бежавшим солдатом. Об этом и говорит Толстой.
