The centrality of improvisation is attributed to the influence of earlier forms of music, such as blues, a form of folk music that originated in part from work songs and the field cries of African-American slaves on plantations. These work songs were usually built around a repetitive call-and-response pattern, but early blues was also improvisational. The performance of classical music is judged more by its fidelity to the score, with less attention to interpretation, ornamentation and accompaniment. The goal of a classical performer is to play the composition as it was written. In contrast, jazz is often characterized as a product of interaction and collaboration, giving less importance to the contribution of the composer, if any, and more to the performer[18]. A jazz performer interprets a melody individually, never playing the same composition twice. Depending on the mood, experience and interaction of the performer with the band members or the audience, the performer can change melodies, harmonies and time signatures.[19]
