She changed her name to Marie Skłodowska-Curie when she got married in 1895,  preferring to keep the Polish part of her name, rather than simply take her husband's. 3.  They conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. 4. On May 13, 1906, she was appointed to the professorship that had been left vacant on her husband's death. 5.  She had an aplastic anaemia, a blood disease that often results from exposure to large amounts of radiation.  6. Marie Curie died on 4 July 1934, in Savoy, France.
