Коньки – достаточно древнее приспособление для передвижения по скользкому льду. Археологические раскопки показали, что они были известны человечеству около 3 тысяч лет назад. Целесообразно отметить, что использование коньков в качестве инструмента в спортивных состязаниях различного рода также очень давнее. Первые письменные упоминания о беге на коньках датируются еще 1174 годом з записках монахов из Великобритании. Хотя активно использовать их в процессе различных состязаний стали гораздо позже. Официально первый конькобежный клуб открылся в Шотландии в 1604 году. Только вот соревнования на международном уровне с этого вида спорта стали проводиться намного позже. Впервые они прошли в 1763 году в Англии. И только спустя десятилетие в 1772 года появился первый письменный свод правил, предписывающих как спортсмены должны вести себя во время состязаний.
