Moby Dick
Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick was published in 1851. First, the public didn’t like the story. It was taken as an important American novel in the 1920s, more than half a century after its publication.
The story begins when the main character of the story Ishmael, describes the final voyage of the Pequod, a whaling ship. The ship’s captain Ahab is losing his mind day by day because he lost his leg after the meeting with a large whale. That whale’s name is Moby Dick. The Pequod sets sail, but this journey will differ from other whaling missions: this time Ahab wants to hunt and kill Moby Dick no matter the cost.
During the journey, Ishmael’s friend called Queequeg gets ill, and he asks other participants to build a coffin for him. Later, he recovers, and that coffin becomes a lifeboat for Ishmael.
Moby Dick fights with Ahab and the Pequod for three days until the whale destroys the ship, killing everyone except Ishmael. Ishmael survives by floating on Queequeg’s coffin until the sailor from another ship saves him
Moby Dick has become popular for two reasons: its unusual writing is a pleasure to read, and its near-mythical characters and plot illustrate today’s global problems.
