In the 15th century Europeans didn't know that two large continents, inhabited by other peoples, lay on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Between 1492-1504, Columbus made four voyages. The first English settlement appeared in America at the beginning of the 17th century. On the 6th of September in 1620th group of people left England for the New World. They sailed from Plymouth, on board the ship "Mayflower". They wanted to start a new life and have no problems with the church. There were 74 men and 28 women. They set up a colony and called that part of a country New England. And there were 13 colonies in America in 1773. The first colonists started the tradition of Independence Day. They celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July.
The United States lies in the central part of the North American Continent between two oceans: the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Friendly Canada to the north and friendly Mexico to the south are the only countries bordering it. The USA is one of the largest countries in the world. The population of the United States is nearly 250 million people, most of the people live in towns. People of different nationalities live in the USA. The official language of the country is English. The capital of the country is Washington. It was named in honour of the President, George Washington. There are many big cities and towns in the USA : New York. San Francisco, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles are the biggest. As the USA is the large country, the climate is different in different regions of the country.
There are many mountains is the USA. For example, the highest peak of the Cordilliers in the USA is 4,4 meters. The main river of the country is the Mississippi. But there are many other great rivers in the USA : the Colorado in the south and the Columbia in the north-west. There are five Great Lakes between the USA and Canada. The USA has an Academy of Sciences. There are many scientific institutions, museums, libraries, theatres and other interesting places in the country.
The national flag of the USA consists of 50 stars, they represent the 50 states of the USA and 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies. Nicknames for the flag include the " Stars and Strips".
