Географические открытия XV-XVI вв. изменили ход мировой истории, положив начало экспансии ведущих западноевропейских стран в различных районах земного шара и появлению колониальных империи.

Первыми колониальными державами стали Испания и Португалия. Уже через год после открытия островов Вест-Индии Христофором Колумбом испанская корона потребовала подтверждения папой римским (1493) своего исключительного права на открытия и Новом Свете. Заключив Тордесильясский (1494 г.) и Сарагосский (1529 г.) договоры, испанцы и португальцы разделили Новый Свет на сферы влияния. Однако договор 1494 г. о разделе сфер влияния по 49-му меридиану показался слишком тесным обеим сторонам (португальцы, вопреки ему, смогли завладеть Бразилией), а после кругосветного путешествия Магеллана потерял смысл. Все новооткрытые земли в Америке, за исключением Бразилии, признавались владениями Испании, которая, кроме этого, захватила Филиппинские о-ва. Бразилия и земли вдоль побережья Африки, Индии и Юго-Восточной Азии достались Португалии.

Nuclear power plants threaten air, water and land. Radiation affects people's health. The accident at Chernobyl in 1986 was tragic for many people. The necessity to employ all the inhabitants of the city leads to the creation of new factories that produce not only consumer goods, but wastes, noise and smog. Another source of global danger is acid rain. It is a relatively new kind of pollution. Acid rains appeared as a reaction of the atmosphere to the air contamination. Acid rains damage water, forest, and soil resources. Acid rains cause the disappearance offish from many lakes, bring death to the forests and woods in Europe and America.
