The Duke of Edinburgh Award started in 1956. In order to complete the award, young people have to spend time doing exciting but challenging activites. They do voluntary work (e.g. helping disabled people), learn a new skill (e.g. designing websites) and go on expeditions. They all have to write a plan before they do the activities. And when they finish, they get a bronze, silver or gold award.
