Panda, or bamboo bear [1] (Latin Ailuropoda melanoleuca) - mammal family Bear [2] with a distinctive black and white coloring of wool, which has some of the attributes of raccoons. The only modern species of the subfamily Ailuropus Ailuropodinae. Giant pandas live in the mountainous regions of central China: Sichuan and Tibet. Since the second half of the XX century, the panda has become something of a national emblem of China. 

Chinese name means "bear-cat". Its western name derives from the small panda. Previously, it was also called spotted a bear (Ailuropus melanoleucus).
